A brand new year

We have settled back into school very well after Christmas.
We have been exploring "The Bakery" in Aistear and have learned lots of new vocabulary and skills, such as how to make our own dough.
In Maths we are learning about ordinal number, click here to play a fun fruit and vegetable ordinal number game which we are very good at.
We are all developing our literacy skills with the help of 6th class. Every week the 6th class pupils will come to our classroom and be our reading buddies. They are very good at reading us stories and ask us lots of questions about the sounds, tricky words and our understanding of the book.
We are also learning the importance of hygiene, especially when preparing food. We are learning clever ways to wash our hands, making sure we wash away all the germs. Our top tip is to sing the ABC song while you lather the front of your hands, back of your hands, thumbs  then fingernails with soap. When you get to the letter Z it's time to rinse!

November News

Junior Infants have just completed all 42 Jolly Phonics sounds. You can listen to the song for each sound below. Remember to practice them every evening and use your sounds to build words and practice your blending skills.
Our Aistear theme for November is the Fire Station. At school we had a fire drill and learned the safety rules. We have been busy building fire stations, creating badges for firefighters and playing in role at the role play area. We have really enjoyed learning about the important role fire fighters play and learned some new fire station themed songs.

We have also introduced "Happygrams" into our classroom. You can earn a Happygram by doing your best, being kind, helpful and a good friend. Mrs. Irwin hopes to give out lots of Happygrams for super behaviour.

Sounds, Skeletons and Stories

Junior Infants are learning Phase 4 of their Jolly Phonics sounds.

We are all having fun singing and dancing along with the Skeleton Dance.

Mrs. Irwin read the story "Room on the Broom" to us. We had fun picking out Halloween words and rhyming words too.

ePortfolios

Each student in Junior and Senior Infants has their own ePortfolio. In our classroom we have been using the app Seesaw to record audio, images and videos of our work. We have recorded some songs and poems and images of our lovely art work too. Each child received their own code this week so that we can share our ePortfolios with parents. Be sure to check them out, we will be adding to them every week.

October is here!

It is the first week of October in our class and we are busy exploring our new Aistear theme "The Birthday Party". We have lots of creative and educational areas set up to build our fine motor and social skills and they are lots of fun too. Our Birthday Party role play area is very exciting, we have been writing invitations at the writing area, building presents with polydrons at the construction area and creating birthday cakes at the creative area.

In English Junior Infants are busy learning lots of new group 3 sounds and practicing our blending skills. We have been using the "Stretchy Snake" strategy to stretch out the sounds in words.
You can listen to our new sound songs below.
Senior Infants have been learning "ck" words like duck, click, stick, brick, clock, and revising our letter formation too. We will be moving on to capital letter formation next week. At our iPad station we are using "Teach your Monster to Read" to reinforce our phonic skills.

We have been exploring "Recount Writing" over the past number of weeks and have been creating pieces of work together using the question words who, what, where, when, why and how to help us structure our work.

In Maths we are busy exploring patterns and counting skills. If you would like to practice some educational Maths skills at home click here to visit the Topmarks website.
Some of the rhymes and songs we are learning are below so you can practice at home too.

Gaeilge ar scoil

We are having lots of fun learning Gaeilge in our classroom every day. You can help your child at home by having a little comhrá, or if you would like to improve your Gaeilge the Cúla4 website from TG4 has fantastic resources, including free apps available to download to your tablets, iPads or phones. We sing songs, learn poems and use Gaeilge throughout the day in our classroom.
